In this entry we will explore the context of “Desire” in the visual arts. The subject hasn’t only returned to our lips now-just a week prior celebrating the Saint that we all cherish on February 14th.
It all started with “Desire” an exhibition conceived by Deitch and Gagosian in collaboration with Diana Widmaier-Picasso (Picasso’s granddaughter, the painter was 46 years old when he started his affair with the 17 year old Marie Therese Walther and flourished into a decade of erotic works) that took Miami by storm in late November 2016.
It then followed with as Artnet described it “bringing Sexy Back” an exhibition at the Museum of Sex in New York titled “Known/Unknown: Private Obsessions and Hidden Desire in Outsider Art” dealing with the subject of desire in various intimate ways.
And now again the subject circulates in the art news with Sotheby’s London upcoming auction sale on February 16th titled “Erotic: Passion and Desire”. A plethora of photographic works, some I doubt would be hung in open public spaces without making you blush.
We decided to jump in cold waters and collect our favourite visual art that convey desire, sensuality, sexiness and eroticism. Happy Valentine’s! <3
