Auckland-based practice Herbst Architects designed the Castle Rock House that overlooks the region Whangarei Heads (New Zealand). The dwelling is a composition of fragmented and connected volumes that appear to tumble down the hillside. According the the NZIA (New Zealand Institute of Architects) Jury Citation 2015 this house commands its site without either pretence or posturing and invites occupation in all seasons. Beautifully considered and expertly crafted, it has a directness and simplicity that engages its occupants with both the essential and the existential nature of the beach house.
