Château de Castille x Picasso

Located in Provence in Southern France, close to the picturesque medieval town of Uzès, this highly important historic château dates back to the thirteenth century. The former property of the Baron de Castille was acquired in 1950 by legendary British art-historian and collector, Douglas Cooper, owner of one of the most important 20th century art collections and close friend of some of world’s most renowned modern artists such as Braque, Léger, Klee, de Staël and Pablo Picasso. Picasso, a frequent visitor of the castle, had five monumental frescos installed at the château which subsequently have been classified, together with other parts of the castle, as “Historic Monuments” by the French State. In all, Château de Castille offers approx. 560 sq.m. of living space, including two drawing rooms, two dining rooms, several kitchens, 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.

The grounds encompass 2 hectares and feature an enchanting historic park with a tree-lined drive leading to the château, a formal knot garden, a central water feature as well as several historic garden ornaments, outbuildings and a staff house.

For the first time in more than 50 years, this extraordinary property is now exclusively offered for sale on the open market, offering the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire not only a highly important historic property, but an important piece of art and of art history at the same time.

Price tag? Available for $9,722,526 USD (bargain, considering Picasso’s 1935 Tête de Femme painting fetched $26 million at Sotheby’s London earlier this month).
