A story of a man, temptations, celebrity, and excess. — Knight of Cups, directed by Terrence Malick, tells the story of screenwriter Rick (Christian Bale) who lives in Los Angeles and tries to make sense of the strange events occurring around him. While he’s successful in his career, his life feels empty. Haunted by the death of one brother and the dire circumstances of the other, he finds temporary solace in the Hollywood excess that defines his existence. Women provide a distraction to the daily pain he must endure. And every encounter that comes his way brings him closer to finding his place in the world.
“Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.”
Rick’s (Christian Bale) father used to read this story to him as a boy.
