Quzika 1865 Winery by PL-T ARCHITECTURE STUDIO in Markam County, Tibet, aims to boost local income and alleviate poverty through cultural tourism. The project is uniquely positioned near natural landmarks and a historic Catholic church.
The winery’s design philosophy emphasizes harmony with nature, respecting Tibetan traditions. It utilizes the mountainous terrain for a gravity-flow process, embedding structures into terraces while preserving old trees. The roof doubles as a waterscape, mimicking traditional salt fields and channeling mountain spring water.
Public spaces, designed to resemble scattered rocks, include a museum, restaurant, and reception areas. Local stone is used for construction, improving insulation and maintaining aesthetic continuity with the surroundings.
The architects drew inspiration from thousand-year-old salt fields, creating layered roofs that interact with sunlight to produce dynamic visual effects. The winery serves as a connection between mountain and river, adapting to the natural landscape.
The project aims to integrate with local life, providing a public space for villagers while respecting the environment. It seeks to resolve conflicts between industrial development and community needs, acting as a “medium” for mutual benefit.
Ultimately, the Quzika Winery project hopes to create economic opportunities for local residents while preserving and celebrating the unique natural and cultural heritage of the region.
