Sauska Tokaj Winery

Nestled in Hungary’s UNESCO-protected Tokaj-Hegyalja region, the Sauska Tokaj winery makes a striking statement, with an elegant form that appears to float above the vineyards. It serves as a modern architectural landmark designed by BORD Architectural Studio to enhance the region’s tourism and prestige in producing fresh white and sparkling wines.

Historically known for its sweet aszú wines, Tokaj has undergone a renaissance since the post-socialist era, embracing modern winemaking and tourism. The winery’s design embodies this evolution, driven by the architect’s vision of creating a structure that seemingly hovers over the landscape without touching the “untouchable” vineyards below.

Perched atop Padi Hill, the winery is defined by two intersecting, lens-shaped volumes housing the restaurant and bar. Supported by slender steel columns, these elevated structures create a powerful illusion of levitation. All functional areas requiring stable temperatures, such as the dramatic circular fermentation halls and cellars, are located underground. This design cleverly separates the industrial process from the visitor experience.

The arrival is discreet, with an entrance integrated into the sloping terrain that leads guests to a lobby and a panoramic terrace with breathtaking views. The interiors, by Tihany Design, feature natural wood, local limestone, and steel, reflecting the vineyard’s timeless essence.

By fusing cutting-edge design with winemaking tradition, the Sauska Tokaj winery is more than a production facility; it is a testament to the evolving spirit of this world-renowned region.
